What is Permanent Birth Control and is it Right for Me?

    Last updated 8 months ago

When you and your partner have decided that your family is complete, you may be looking for ways to prevent future pregnancies. While some women may choose traditional methods of contraception like birth control pills or tubal ligation, others may be looking for a more permanent and less invasive means of birth control. If you fall in the latter category, talk to your gynecologist about Essure, a non-surgical procedure, done in the office in most cases, that permanently prevents pregnancy.

    What is Essure?

A method of permanent birth control, Essure uses your own body’s natural healing process to prevent pregnancy. During this procedure, your ob-gyn will insert a soft, flexible coil into each fallopian tube. Over the next three months, your body will then create a natural barrier around these inserts to prevent sperm from reaching the eggs. The Essure procedure is non-surgical and does not involve the use of hormones, making it a safe and convenient birth control option for many women that can be performed right in your doctor’s office. It does require a three month waiting period in which other contraception must be used, and a confirmatory x-ray test prior to stopping other contraception.

Who is a Candidate for Permanent Birth Control?

Women who are certain they have completed child bearing may be good candidates for Essure. This procedure may also benefit women who wish to avoid becoming pregnant due to physical illnesses or other medical reasons. This procedure does not prevent sexually transmitted diseases and is not reversible.

    • I've been seeing Dr. Kindrick for 7 years now. She delivered my daughter 3 years ago, helped me through a tubal pregnancy and now we are pregnant again and doing well. Dr. Kindrick is very personable and I have recommended her to other people who love her just as much as I do.

    A Short Summary on Menopause

    Last updated 8 months ago

The stage of life that marks her transition out of her reproductive years, menopause can be a confusing and uncomfortable change to navigate. If you think you may be undergoing menopause, schedule an appointment with your gynecologist. He or she can help explain the process, what to expect, and how to manage disruptive symptoms. Learn more about menopause in the video below:

Menopause describes the cessation of a woman’s menstrual cycle, a change that occurs naturally somewhere between the ages of 45 and 55. During menopause, your body produces less of certain hormones and your ovaries cease egg production. These changes trigger menopause symptoms like hot flashes, sweating, sleeping problems, and mood changes. If you have experienced these symptoms, talk to your physician for an accurate diagnosis and an overview of what you can expect from menopause.

Becoming More Comfortable at the Gynecologist's Office

    Last updated 9 months ago

Visiting your ob-gyn can be an anxiety-inducing experience, especially if you are at risk for certain diseases or scheduling an appointment for the first time. Regular gynecology appointments, though, can actually calm your concerns by educating you on what to expect, how to prepare for treatment, and how to protect your health. If you have questions about your health, talk to your gynecologist today and read more in the resources below.

    • For many young women, visiting the gynecologist for their first pelvic exam can be a nerve-wracking experience. To help you prepare for the exam and what to expect, read through this WebMD guide to pelvic exams.
    • A test that evaluates the health of your cervix, a Pap smear is critical in the early detection of cervical cancer. This FAQ guide to Pap smears provides more information about how the test is performed and the information its results provide.
    • While prenatal care is important for all expecting mothers, women with a high-risk pregnancy may need to visit their obstetrician more often for monitoring. To learn more about what constitutes a high-risk pregnancy, talk to your physician and refer to this guide from the National Institutes of Health.
